Marigold Arts is please to
present an exhibition of wildlife portraits by Ruth Tatter (watercolors)
and Glen Smith (oils). The exhibition will include images
of animals we have come to think of as exotic as well as inhabitants of
nearby forests, deserts, and wetlands. Both artists are active wildlife
preservationists.
Ruth Tatter:
Ocelot
Tatter’s wildlife portraits
make the viewer the subject of an inscrutable animal gaze, inverting the
usual perspective of animal-as-subject. Liberated from notions of
subjectivity and sentimentalism, Tatter’s wildlife scrutinize us, or simply
go about the business of being wildlife, with no regard for the human viewer.
This perspective allows the viewer to effectively disappear, or to become
part of the untamed landscape; destabilizing what we think we know about
animals and our separateness from them.
Ruth
Tatter: Peacock
Her watercolor images are photographic
in their realism and imbued with a sense of heart and dignity. Her
palette is influenced by the far-flung habitats and wetter climes that
many of her subjects inhabit. Tatter’s work has been exhibited
and collected throughout the West. She resides in the mountains
of Northern New Mexico.
Glen Smith:
Scarlet Macaw and Friend
Glen Smith employs
his expressive oil paintings in the service of his environmental activism.
He recently painted a series of endangered animals. His portrait
of a grizzly bear hangs in the Washington D. C. office of Defenders of
Wildlife, which used images of his artwork in a year-long public education
campaign. The endangered species series was awarded a gold
certificate of excellence at the First International Eco Awards of the
Natural Resources Defense Council. Smith received a degree from the
Kansas City Art Institute and School of Design and resides in Santa Fe.
